Insight That Carries Truth
Yoga Sutras 1.48
Meaning · English
In that clear state, the knowing that arises carries truth. What it holds is what is so, with nothing false mixed in.
Three words carry the sutra. Tatra means 'there', in the state just reached. Prajna is wisdom or insight: a knowing that goes all the way through, not a passing opinion. Ritambhara is two words joined. Rita is truth, the way things actually are. Bhara is a bearing or carrying, from the root for 'to carry'. So the insight is truth-bearing. The plain sense: in that state of inner clarity, the insight that arises carries truth, and only truth. Patanjali does not say it is mostly right. He says it is full of what is real. Why say it? The sutra before speaks of clarity settling in the inner self. A student would ask whether what is known from that clarity can be trusted, or whether it is one more colored view. Patanjali answers that it can, because the mind that knew through habit and judgment has gone quiet. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes the name literally: this insight bears truth, and no false knowledge remains in it. The later commentators generally follow him here.
Pond water stirred by wind shows a broken, wobbling floor. Once the water settles, every pebble on the bottom is plain, in its true place and shape. The settled water adds nothing. It only stops distorting. The truth-bearing insight is like that clear view of the bottom.
1. Sit quietly for five minutes today, with no task and no screen. Let the day's chatter run down without chasing it. 2. When you stand up, look at one ordinary thing, such as a cup or a window, and notice how plainly it shows itself. 3. Tonight, recall one judgment you made in a hurry. Ask whether the calmer view, from a settled moment, says the same thing.
