Clear Inner Calm

Yoga Sutras 1.47

Meaning · English

When the mind grows skilled and clear in its seeing, without turning things over in thought, a quiet brightness settles in the inner self.

Three terms carry the sutra. Nirvichara: vichara is the mind moving over an object, weighing it, naming it, comparing it; nir- means without. Vaisharadya is skill, or clearness, the ease of a practised hand. Adhyatma is the self within, and prasada is a settling, the way muddy water becomes clear and still. Taken whole: when absorption has no more mental pacing about its object, and that clarity has become steady, a calm clearness arises in the inner self. Patanjali says this because the earlier verses describe absorption passing from coarse to subtle objects. This sutra names what the last stage brings: the mind no longer stirs the object, so what remains is clear. Vyasa's Bhashya takes it this way: the knowing becomes unobstructed and flows without the dimness that restlessness brings, and the calm is a clarity of the mind's own nature. The commentators agree the clarity belongs to the mind's purest stage, and they speak of it as the ground for the true knowing named next.

A glass of river water carried in from the bank is cloudy with silt. Set on a table and left alone, the silt sinks and the water turns clear to the bottom. The silt is the mind's turning over of its object. The clear water is the calm that comes when that stirring stops.

1. Choose one plain object today, such as a cup or a leaf, and sit with it for three minutes. 2. Look at it without naming it, comparing it, or telling yourself a story about it. 3. Each time a comment starts in your head, notice it and return to simply seeing. 4. When the three minutes end, notice how the mind feels, without judging it.
