Meaning · English
Uddhava says: Explain to me, Lord, the yoga of action, the way of worshipping you. Tell me how your devotees, the Satvatas, worship you, and by what means, O bull among the Satvatas. The sages say this is, again and again, the highest good for people: Narada, the revered Vyasa, and the teacher, the son of Angiras.
Uddhava has been given the teaching of knowledge. Now he asks for something he can do with his hands. Three words carry the request. Kriya means action, a thing done. Yoga means joining, so kriya yoga is action that joins a person to Krishna. Aradhana means worship, from a root sense of pleasing or winning over: worship here is an offering made to please a beloved, not a performance. Nihshreyasa means the highest good, the point past which nothing better is asked for. The clauses run in order. First he asks Krishna to explain the practice of worshipping him. Then he asks how the Satvatas, Krishna's own devotees, worship him, and by what method. Then he gives his reason: the sages keep saying that this is the supreme good for human beings, and he names three, Narada, Vyasa and Brihaspati, the son of Angiras. So the question is practical. Uddhava does not want a theory of worship. He wants the actual steps, from the one being worshipped, and he backs the request with teachers whose word is trusted. Krishna is asked because he can say what pleases him best.
A man holds a seed from his grandmother's garden and walks to the neighbour who has grown it for years. He does not ask what a plant is. He asks how deep, how much water, which window. Uddhava's request is that: the seed is his devotion, and Krishna is asked for the method of tending it.
1. Tonight, pick one small act of offering you already have at home: a lamp, a flower, a glass of water, or a spoon of food set aside. 2. Before doing it, ask yourself in one plain sentence how you want to offer it, and to whom. 3. Do the act slowly, for about two minutes, in one fixed spot. 4. Afterwards, notice whether your hands or your mind were steadier. Repeat at the same hour tomorrow.
A young woman has been given her grandmother's brass lamp. She stands in her kitchen at dusk, wanting to light it properly and not knowing the steps. She is embarrassed to phone anyone and ask. Uddhava's request shows another way through that moment. He does not guess, and he does not treat the wish as foolish. He goes to the one who knows and asks plainly for the method. She could do the same: ask an older relative which hour, which wick, what to say, and write it down. Then the lamp stops being an object she is anxious about and becomes an act she can repeat. Ordinary experience agrees that a small, repeated, well-understood act steadies a restless mind more than a vague intention does. The limit is plain. Asking for the steps does not give the feeling of devotion, and it does not settle grief or doubt. The text offers it as a first step, and the rest is left to the one who practises.
