From your lotus mouth came what the unborn Lord Brahma told his sons, Bhrigu and the others, and what Lord Shiva told the Goddess. I take it that this is accepted by all the classes of society and all the stages of life, and also by women and by workers, O giver of honour, as the best of all good things. Lotus-eyed one, it loosens the bonds of action. Tell it, Lord of the lords of the universe, to a devotee who loves you.

Uddhava is still asking for the worship teaching, and here he gives his reasons for asking. He says it is old: Brahma gave it to his sons, led by Bhrigu, and Shiva gave it to the Goddess. Both are great teachers, and both heard it from Krishna, so Uddhava is asking the source itself. He then says it is accepted by everyone. The text names the classes of society (varna), the four stages of life (ashrama), and also women and workers (shudra). He calls it the best of good things (shreyas), meaning what is truly good for a person, not only what is pleasant. The word he uses for Krishna, manada, means one who gives honour. Krishna honours everyone, so Uddhava expects the teaching to be given to everyone. He says it loosens karma-bandha, the bonds of action. Every act leaves a pull toward more acts. Uddhava says this worship loosens that pull. Last comes his request. He calls himself a bhakta, one who shares in Krishna through loving devotion, and anurakta, one whose heart is coloured by love for him. He does not claim learning or merit. He asks as a friend who loves, and he addresses Krishna as Lord of the lords of the universe, so that what is asked is the highest teaching, not a small favour. He is making the case that this worship is trusted, open to all, and good, and that he is a fit person to receive it.

A village well in the middle of a lane, with no gate. The potter, the schoolteacher and the washerwoman each come with their own pot and go home with the same water. The worship Uddhava asks for is like that: one source that anyone may draw from.

1. Tonight, choose one small thing you already have: a lamp, a flower, a cup of water. 2. Set it down in a clean spot and stand before it for one minute. 3. Say, in your own words and your own language, that you offer it to Krishna because you love him. 4. Notice whether you felt you needed any training or permission. Notice that you did not.

A woman has cooked all day at a wedding hall. Her hands smell of onions and she has never read a scripture. A relative has just told her that proper worship needs training she does not have, and she goes home wondering if it is meant for her. Uddhava's words speak to that moment. He says the teaching reached him from Brahma and Shiva, and that it is accepted by every class, every stage of life, women and workers included. So she can take the doubt out of the question. She does not have to qualify. She can put a flower and a lit lamp before the picture and offer them with love, as a devotee asking and giving. Ordinary experience agrees that a simple act done daily is easier to keep than a grand one that is put off. The act is also within reach of a tired person. The verse does not promise that the day's tiredness will lift, or that her relative will stop talking. It does not replace rest, food or a doctor. It says only that the door is open to her.
