Countless Ones Upon the Earth

Shukla Yajurveda 16.54

Meaning · English

Countless thousands are the Rudras who dwell upon the earth. Of them we unstring the bows, a thousand leagues away.

Rudra is the Vedic god of storm, wild places and healing, feared and also loved. Here he is not one figure but countless thousands, a Rudra in every patch of ground. Each carries a bow. The singers ask that those bows be unstrung, slackened so no arrow can fly, and that this happen a thousand leagues off, at the farthest distance one can name. Later commentators read the verb as either loosening or stretching away; both keep the arrow from this place.

A hunter coming home sets his bow against the wall and slips the loop of the string off one end. The wood straightens, the string hangs loose, and the bow cannot shoot until someone bends it again. The mantra asks this of every Rudra on earth: the power stays, the bow stays, unbent, far from where people live.
