The Weapon Hung Aside
Shukla Yajurveda 16.51
Meaning · English
Most generous, most gentle, be gentle to us and well-disposed. Set your weapon on the highest tree, come wearing the hide, come carrying your bow.
The worshipper asks Rudra to come near, but with his weapon set aside. He is called most generous, the one who pours out gifts like rain. He is called most gentle, the auspicious one. The prayer asks him to be of good mind toward the people singing. His weapon is to be left high in a far tree, out of reach. He comes dressed in an animal hide, a hunter's clothing. He still holds his bow, but he does not draw it. Commentators take the highest tree as one far away from the singers.
A forest guard comes home at dusk. Before he steps through the door, he hangs his rifle on a high hook outside, where the children cannot reach it. He walks in still in his rough work clothes. The danger is still his, still close by, but it has been put out of use for the visit.
