The Healing Form
Shukla Yajurveda 16.49
Meaning · English
Rudra, that body of yours which is kind, kind every day, a medicine; kind, a medicine for sickness. With that, be gracious to us, that we may live.
Rudra, the fierce god of storm and wild places, is asked to come in one particular body. Body here means a form he takes, and he has more than one. The kind form is named three times. It is kind every day, not only on good days. It is medicine. It is medicine for sickness, as the old commentators Uvaṭa and Mahīdhara read the rare word. The request is plain: meet us in that form, so that we may go on living.
Picture a farmer's hand. All day it swings the axe and grips the plough. At night the same hand rests, open, on a feverish child's forehead. The child does not ask for a different father, only for that hand. The singer asks Rudra the same way: not for another god, but for the form of him that heals.
