From Cow-Pen to Heart

Shukla Yajurveda 16.44

Meaning · English

Homage to the one in the herd and the cow-stall, in the bed and the house, in the heart and the eddy (or mist), in the pit and the deep cave.

Each name places Rudra somewhere. He is in the moving herd and the stall where cattle rest at night. He is in the bed and in the house around it. He is in the heart, and in the eddy of water; medieval commentators read that word as the mist instead. Then he is in the pit or hollow and the deep cave. The list moves from the farm to the heart, and back out to the wild.

Picture morning light coming through one window of a farmhouse. It falls on the sleeping cattle, across the bed, along the kitchen floor, and through a crack into the dark cellar. Nothing in the house has to reach for it. In the same way, the mantra finds Rudra in the stall, the bed, the heart and the cave.
