Kind, and Kinder Still

Meaning · English
Homage to the source of ease and the source of delight; homage to the maker of ease and the maker of delight; homage to the kind one, and the kinder still.
After names of striking and slaying, the chant turns gentle. Two words carry it: ease, meaning welfare and safety, and delight, meaning gladness of heart. The first pair calls Rudra the place these arise from. The second calls him the one who makes them. Then come kind, and kinder still. Kind is the word that later became Shiva's own name; here it still describes Rudra. Some commentators take ease as happiness in this life and delight as the joy of release.
A kitchen stove: the same flame that would scorch a careless hand boils the morning milk and keeps the family fed. Nobody keeps two fires, one dangerous and one useful. The mantra makes the same move. The fierce Rudra of the earlier names is the one now called maker of ease and delight.
