Meaning · English
Homage to the eldest and the youngest, to the first-born and the later-born, to the middle one and the unripe, to the hindmost and the one at the root.
Rudra, the storm god of the Veda, fierce and healing, is greeted at every place in a line of birth. Eldest and youngest are the two ends of a family. First-born and later-born name the same line by order of arrival. The middle one stands between. The next word means someone not yet grown bold; most commentators read immaturity, some read timidity. The hindmost comes last, and the one at the root sits lowest, at the base. Rank and age leave no one outside the homage.
Picture a family photo taken on a staircase: grandparents on the top step, parents below, a shy child half hidden behind a parent's knee, the newest baby held on the bottom step. Every step holds someone. The verse bows to each step in turn, top to bottom, and finds Rudra standing on every one.
