Dogs and the Blue Throat

Shukla Yajurveda 16.28

नमः श्वभ्यः श्वपतिभ्यश्च वो नमो नमो भवाय च रुद्राय च नमः शर्वाय च पशुपतये च नमो नीलग्रीवाय च शितिकण्ठाय च ॥

Meaning · English

Homage to you, dogs and masters of dogs. Homage to Bhava and Rudra, to Sharva and the lord of beasts, to the blue-necked and the white-throated.

The salute moves from dogs and the men who keep them to Rudra's own names, with no pause between. Bhava is the one from whom things come to be. Sharva is the archer whose arrow strikes. Rudra, the roarer, stands between them. The lord of beasts keeps the herds. Sāyaṇa reads him as their protector, while later Shaiva readers take the beasts to be every bound soul. His throat is named twice, dark blue and pale white. Later tradition ties the blue to poison he swallowed.

A grandmother on her doorstep feeds the street dogs every morning. With the same hand she drives off a snarling one with a stick. The lane has two names for her, one fond and one wary. The paired names work the same way: Bhava, who brings to life, and Sharva, who strikes, are one presence called twice.

तुम्हें नमन, कुत्तों को और कुत्तों के स्वामियों को। भव और रुद्र को नमन, शर्व और पशुपति को, नीले कंठ वाले और श्वेत कंठ वाले को।

वंदना कुत्तों और उन्हें पालने वाले मनुष्यों से सीधे रुद्र के अपने नामों तक पहुँचती है, बीच में कोई ठहराव नहीं। भव वे हैं जिनसे सब कुछ उत्पन्न होता है। शर्व वे धनुर्धर हैं जिनका बाण लक्ष्य पर लगता है। गर्जन करने वाले रुद्र इन दोनों के बीच खड़े हैं। पशुपति पशुओं के झुंडों को सँभालते हैं। सायण उन्हें उनका रक्षक मानते हैं, जबकि बाद के शैव व्याख्याकार पशुओं को हर बंधा हुआ जीव समझते हैं। उनके कंठ का नाम दो बार आता है, गहरा नीला और हल्का श्वेत। बाद की परंपरा इस नीलेपन को उनके पिए हुए विष से जोड़ती है।

एक दादी हर सुबह अपनी चौखट पर बैठकर गली के कुत्तों को खाना खिलाती है। उसी हाथ से वह एक गुर्राते कुत्ते को लाठी से भगा देती है। गली में उसके दो नाम हैं, एक स्नेह भरा और एक सावधानी भरा। जोड़े में आए ये नाम भी इसी तरह काम करते हैं: जीवन देने वाले भव और प्रहार करने वाले शर्व एक ही सत्ता हैं, जिसे दो बार पुकारा गया है।
