Parasara told Maitreya the story of Prahlada. Long ago, Hiranyakashipu, son of Diti, grew proud of a boon Brahma had given him, and brought the three worlds under his rule. He took Indra's throne. He did the work of the sun, the wind, the lord of waters, fire and the moon. He became lord of riches and of Yama. Every offering made in sacrifice to the gods, he kept for himself. The gods, afraid, left their own realm and wandered the earth in mortal disguise. Swollen with his wealth, Hiranyakashipu took every pleasure he wanted. Siddhas, Gandharvas and Pannagas worshipped him while he drank. Some sang, some played instruments, some called out his victory, and the nymphs danced in his crystal palace.
His son Prahlada was still a boy, living at his teacher's house and learning what children learn. One day he came with his teacher before his father, who was drinking. Hiranyakashipu lifted the boy from where he had bowed at his feet and said, "Tell me, my boy, the substance of what you have studied." Prahlada answered, "Hear it, father, and what fills my thoughts. I bow to the Great Being who has no beginning, middle or end, who neither grows nor shrinks. He is the imperishable lord of the world, the cause of all causes." Hearing this, the lord of the Daityas went red-eyed with rage, his lip swollen, and he turned on the teacher.
"Vile Brahmana," he said, "you have taught my son to praise my enemy, and you have done it to insult me." The teacher answered, "Lord of the Daityas, do not give way to anger. I did not teach him this." So Hiranyakashipu asked the boy, "Who taught you, then?" Prahlada said, "Vishnu, father. He is the teacher of the whole world and he lives in our minds. Who else could teach us anything?" "Who is this Vishnu you keep naming in front of me?" Hiranyakashipu demanded. "Do you want to die?" Prahlada said, "He is the great God whom the devout meditate on, whose glory words cannot describe, from whom all things come. He is the creator and lord of me, of all creatures, and of you. Be gentle, father. Why are you angry?"
Hiranyakashipu said, "What spirit has got into this foolish boy, that he talks like one possessed?" Prahlada replied that Vishnu was not only in his mind but pervaded the whole universe, and commanded him, his father and every creature. Hiranyakashipu ordered the Daityas to take the boy back to his teacher's house and keep him in line, since someone must have taught him to sing the praises of his enemies. Prahlada went back and studied there, attending his teacher faithfully. After a long time his father sent for him again and said, "Recite me some poem." Prahlada only said, "May Vishnu be pleased with us, from whom matter and soul arise, from whom all that moves and all that is still comes forth."
Then Hiranyakashipu said, "Destroy this boy. His life is no use. He has betrayed his own family." Hundreds and thousands of Daityas took up huge weapons to kill him. Prahlada said to them, "Vishnu is in your weapons as he is in my mind, so your weapons will fail to hurt me." Hundreds of them struck him. He felt no pain at all, and his strength came back each time. Hiranyakashipu said, "Stop praising my enemy, you fool. I promise you safety." Prahlada answered, "No fear can overcome me, because the one who removes all dangers is present in my mind. Remembering him is enough to take away every peril of birth and of human weakness."
