A Voice That Breaks

Meaning · English
His voice chokes and falters, his heart melts, he weeps again and again, sometimes laughs, and shamelessly sings aloud and dances. Joined to devotion for me, such a one purifies the whole world.
Three words carry the verse. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in: the devotee takes part in what he loves. Citta is the heart-mind, the place where thoughts and feelings gather. Dravate means melts, as wax does near a flame. Krishna describes a devotee whose citta has softened this way. The voice catches in the throat. Tears come again and again. Now and then he laughs. Then he drops his embarrassment, vilajja, and sings out loud and dances. Each sign is a different side of one love that has stopped holding itself back. The last line gives the result: joined to devotion for Krishna, he purifies the world, bhuvana, meaning everyone around him. Sridhara Svami reads these as marks of a heart wholly given over to the Lord. The reason Krishna says this to Uddhava comes from the question running through the chapter: what makes a person clean inside? Krishna answers that it is a heart that has been moved, and he points to the living signs. He asks the listener to see that devotion is warm and bodily, and that it does not stay hidden.
Think of a mother at a railway platform when her son steps off the train after a year away. Her voice cracks, she laughs, she cries, and she forgets who is watching. Love that large breaks the usual manners. The devotee's open singing is that same love, turned toward Krishna.
1. Choose one song, verse or name of God that you love. Do it today, alone, for five minutes. 2. Say or sing it aloud, not silently, even if your voice is rough. 3. Notice the moment you want to hold back or feel foolish. Stay with it and keep going gently. 4. Afterward, sit for a minute and notice what your chest and throat feel like.
A man stands at the back of a crowded temple hall at evening prayer. Everyone around him is singing. His throat tightens, his eyes sting, and he presses his lips shut because he does not want to be seen. Krishna's words describe what he is holding back. The tight throat and wet eyes are ordinary signs of strong feeling, and people know them from weddings, funerals and reunions. Many of us learn early to hide them. The verse would change that moment in small steps: he notices the tightness, lets his breath go out, and lets his voice join the others, however rough it is. Ordinary experience confirms that singing together and weeping openly often leave a person lighter and closer to others. The text teaches more than this. It says such a devotee purifies the world, and that claim stays Krishna's teaching. It does not promise that the man's sorrows lift, that his troubles end, or that tears replace medical help where he needs it.
