Cleansing the Self

As gold put into the fire and blown upon gives up its dross and takes again its own true colour, so the self, shaking off what its actions have left clinging to it through the discipline of devotion to me, comes to share in me. And as the self is cleansed more and more by hearing and speaking my sacred stories, so it sees the subtle thing more and more, as the eye sees when it has been anointed with salve.
Krishna's key words come first. Bhakti-yoga is loving devotion (bhakti, from bhaj, to share in) held as a steady discipline (yoga, joining). Karmanushaya is what actions leave behind. Anushaya is what clings afterward, like a stain after a spill. Shravana is hearing, and abhidhana is speaking or naming. Together they make the practice Krishna points to: hearing and speaking his sacred stories. The first clause is the gold. Gold mixed with dross is heated and blown on until the impurity burns off. What remains is not new gold. It is the same gold in its own colour. Krishna says the self is like this. Nothing foreign is added. The residue of past actions is shaken off, and the self comes to share in him. The second clause gives the measure. The words twice repeated, as and as, so and so, say the cleansing is gradual. Each hearing and speaking rinses the self a little more, and a little more of the subtle thing becomes visible, as it does to an eye that has been anointed with salve. The commentators generally read the subtle thing as the finer reality of the self and of Krishna, which coarse sight passes over. This answers the question left by the verses before it: if learning, goodness and austerity do not purify without devotion, what does? Krishna's answer is devotion, kept up patiently by hearing and speaking of him.
A window grey with a season of dust shows only a blur of green. One pass of a damp cloth clears a patch, and a branch appears. Another pass shows a bird. The garden was always there. The dust is the residue of actions, each pass of the cloth is a hearing of Krishna's stories, and the clearing patch is the finer sight.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and read aloud, or listen to, one short story or passage about Krishna that you already know. 2. When it ends, say in one plain sentence what it told you, aloud, to yourself or to someone at home. 3. Notice one small thing: your mood, your breathing, or something in the room you had not looked at. 4. Repeat at the same hour for seven days and see whether the noticing changes.
A man sits at the kitchen table after a hard quarrel with his brother over their father's land. His jaw is tight and he is rehearsing what he will say next. From the next room his mother hums a hymn while she cooks, and he finds he is listening. Gradually the rehearsing slows. He starts to recall the brother as a boy, and then the brother's side of the argument, which an hour ago he could not see at all. Krishna's teaching is that hearing and speaking of him rinses the self and clears its sight by degrees. In that kitchen the change is small and real. Attention is taken off the grievance, and a quieter mind does notice more. Ordinary experience confirms that agitation narrows what a person can see. The verse does not promise that the quarrel ends, that the land is divided fairly, or that a hurt is healed in an evening. The gold image speaks of a slow process of heating, not a single moment. Where a family conflict is dangerous, or a person's distress has gone on for weeks, a doctor, counsellor or elder is the right person to ask as well.
