Meaning · English
The mind that keeps dwelling on sense objects clings to those objects. The mind that keeps remembering me dissolves in me alone. So give up this idle brooding on what is not real, which is like a daydream in sleep. Let go of it, and set your mind firmly on me, a mind steeped in my being.
Krishna begins with a plain observation. Whatever the mind keeps returning to, it ends up stuck to. He calls the things the senses reach for viṣaya, objects of the senses: sights, sounds, tastes, possessions. Brood on them and the mind attaches to them. Then he turns it around. Anusmaraṇa is remembering again and again, from smṛ, to remember, with anu, along or after. A mind that does this with Krishna melts into him, the way a lump of salt melts into water. From this he draws his instruction. The brooding he tells Uddhava to drop is asat, what does not last, and he compares it to a daydream spun while half asleep: vivid while it runs, empty when it ends. He does not call the world unreal here. He names a habit of mind. Then comes the positive half. Samādhatsva means to set down firmly, placing the mind in one spot and leaving it there. Bhāvita means steeped, made to become, like cloth that has sat in a dye. The answer comes just after Uddhava has asked how to hold on to Krishna in the last days. The reason Krishna gives is that the mind will become something in any case. He asks Uddhava to choose what it is steeped in. The commentators read the dissolving as the mind's wandering coming to rest in him.
A white cloth left in a vat of dye does not decide what colour it becomes. It takes the colour of whatever it soaks in. The mind is the cloth, and what it keeps dwelling on is the dye. Krishna asks that the vat be himself.
1. Tonight, when your mind starts replaying a worry or a wish, notice it, and say to yourself, "daydream." 2. Choose one short remembrance of Krishna: his name, or one picture of him. 3. Hold it for two minutes at the same time each day, such as just after waking. 4. When the mind slides off, bring it back without scolding, and notice how quickly it slid.
A woman on the last train home replays an argument with her sister. She has already said everything twice in her head, and each round makes it louder and her shoulders tighter. Nothing new has been decided. The verse would begin with the plain observation that the mind is clinging to this one thing because it keeps returning to it. Next comes the naming: this is brooding, a daydream running behind her eyes, and it has no further use tonight. Then she gives the mind somewhere else to rest, a name or a form of Krishna, held gently and returned to each time she drifts. Ordinary experience agrees that what we keep chewing on grows larger, and that a mind given a steady place to rest quiets down. The verse does not promise that the quarrel will end or that the hurt was imagined. It does not replace talking to her sister, or seeing a doctor if the brooding becomes sleeplessness or low mood that will not lift. It speaks only of where the mind is placed. The text's teaching is that placing it on Krishna is where the mind comes to rest.
