Choosing Your Company

Meaning · English
Keeping far away from the company of women, and from the company of men who are attached to women, the self-possessed man sits in a safe, secluded place and thinks of me, without drowsiness. For a man, no other attachment brings such affliction and such bondage as the company of women, and of those who are fond of that company.
Krishna is speaking to Uddhava, a man, and he names one kind of company as the strongest of all binding things: women, and men who live for that company. Four words carry it. Sanga is clinging company, from the root sanj, to stick. Atmavan is one who has himself in hand. Vivikta means set apart, a place sifted free of crowd. Atandrita means without tandra, the heavy drowsiness that drifts in on a mind left alone. Bandha is a binding, from bandh, to tie. Klesa is affliction, the ache that comes with being tied. The clauses run in order. He keeps away from entangling company, and does so from a distance, before it pulls. He sits in a safe, quiet place. He thinks of Krishna, awake and unwearied. Then comes the reason: no other attachment brings so much suffering and bondage as this one, and the same goes for those who keep such company themselves. This sits in a talk about steadying the mind, where Krishna has just said the mind grows like what it dwells on. Company feeds what it dwells on. The text asks for distance from what ties the heart, not contempt for any person. It asks the listener to guard the quiet in which remembering Krishna can happen.
A coat hung for an evening in a smoky kitchen carries the smell home, though nobody chose it. Company works like that smoke. Time spent close to what the heart clings to leaves its mark on the mind, so Krishna advises hanging the coat elsewhere.
1. Tonight, pick one person or gathering that leaves you restless, and notice how your mind feels an hour afterward. 2. This week, choose one such invitation to decline politely, and keep the hour for yourself. 3. Sit in the quietest spot at home for ten minutes, upright and awake, and think of Krishna, or of whatever form of the divine you love. 4. If drowsiness comes, wash your face and begin again.
A young man in a hostel room at eleven at night has the group chat buzzing. Friends want him out again, and he knows how he will feel at one in the morning: wired, scattered, a little ashamed. He had meant to sit quietly for ten minutes. Krishna's order of steps would have him settle the matter early and from a distance, before the pull of the evening is on him. Then he would go to a quiet corner and keep awake while he does. Ordinary experience confirms that we take on the pace and appetites of those around us, and that it is easier to avoid a temptation than to resist it face to face. The verse does not promise that distance will end longing, nor that solitude is right for everyone at every hour. It speaks to a man in Krishna's time, and it names attachment, not women as persons, as the thing that binds. It also does not replace a doctor or counsellor for someone who is lonely or low.
