Lotus-eyed one, how should one who longs for freedom meditate on you? In what manner, in what form, and with what nature? Please tell me this meditation.

Uddhava is asking, and his question is built carefully. Three words carry it. Dhyana means meditation, from the root dhyai, to hold something in the mind and keep thinking of it. Mumukshu means one who longs to be freed, from the wish for release. Aravindaksha, lotus-eyed, is an affectionate address, the way a close friend uses a pet name. Uddhava asks three things about the meditation. How should it be done, what form should the mind rest on, and what is the nature of the one meditated on? The commentators take these as method, form and inner nature. Then he asks Krishna outright to say it. The question comes here because Krishna has just told him that the mind becomes what it dwells on, and that a mind turned toward Krishna settles in him. Uddhava hears that and asks what any listener would ask next: what, exactly, do I hold in mind? He does not want a general instruction to think of God. He wants a way and a form. The verse asks the listener to want that same exactness, and to ask a teacher for it instead of settling for a vague wish.

A traveller told only to find a certain house in the village asks for more. How do I walk there, what does it look like, who lives inside? Uddhava does the same with meditation: the way, the form and the nature of the one he is walking toward.

1. Tonight, take a minute before sleep and write one sentence: how I would like to hold God in mind, in what form, with what nature. 2. Notice which of the three, the way, the form or the nature, you can answer least easily. 3. This week, ask one elder or teacher you trust how they hold their own practice in mind, and listen without arguing.

A grandmother sits at a bus stop wanting to pray, but the harder she tries to empty her head, the more it fills with her son's unpaid bills. She gives up and feels she has failed at praying. Uddhava's question changes that moment. He does not ask how to have no thoughts. He asks what to hold, and how. Ordinary experience agrees that a restless mind is steadier when given one clear thing to rest on than when told to be blank. So she could ask herself which form of God she loves, and how she would like to approach it. Then she could turn to that and let the bills wait until she gets home. The text's own teaching is that the mind takes the shape of what it dwells on, and the question treats that as something to be taught step by step, not guessed at. It does not promise that the worry goes away or that the bills get paid. If worry or low mood follows her everywhere and will not lift, a doctor is the right person to see as well.
