Seated on an even seat, the body straight and level, at ease as far as is comfortable, hands laid in the lap, eyes fixed on the tip of his own nose, he should clear the path of the breath. He draws in, holds and lets out, and also does it in the reverse order, slowly, practising with his senses mastered.
Uddhava has asked how to meditate. Krishna begins with the body, before any thought of him. Three words carry the teaching. Asana is the seat, from the root as, to sit: it must be even, neither tilted nor piled up. Prana is the breath, the moving life in the body, and Krishna speaks of its path, as if it were a lane that can be cleared. Puraka, kumbhaka and rechaka are the three acts of the breath: filling, holding like a full pot (kumbha), and emptying. Krishna lists the clauses in order. Sit level, with the body upright and the same on both sides. Stay comfortable, so that nothing aches. Rest the hands in the lap. Fix the eyes on the nose-tip so they stop wandering. Then clear the breath by the three acts, and by the reverse order too, slowly. Krishna adds that the one who practises has mastered the senses, meaning they no longer pull him about. The reason it comes first is Uddhava's question: how should a seeker meditate? A restless body and ragged breath give the mind nothing steady to stand on. Krishna asks the listener for patience. The work is quiet and small, and done gently.
A mason lays a spirit level on a fresh course of bricks and nudges them until the bubble rests in the middle. Only then does he build higher. The even seat and the cleared breath are that levelling: the body is set true before the real work of meditation is laid on it.
1. Tonight or tomorrow morning, sit on a chair or the floor for five minutes. Keep the back tall and level, and rest both hands in your lap. Shift until nothing pinches. 2. Let your gaze fall softly toward the tip of your nose. If your eyes strain, close them. 3. Breathe in and out slowly for ten breaths, without holding. Notice where the breath catches or hurries.
A tailor finishes at dusk with a sore back, a tight chest and a head still running over unpaid bills. He sits on a stool, shoulders hunched, and breathes in short, high sips. Now he takes the verse's order. He sits level, so his weight is carried by his bones instead of his muscles. He rests his hands, which gives his arms nothing to do. He lowers his gaze to one spot. He lets the breath run long and slow. Ordinary experience bears this out: a hunched body and a fast breath go with a hurried mind, and sitting upright and breathing slowly settle both. Holding the breath is a different matter. People with heart or lung trouble, high blood pressure or pregnancy should ask a doctor first, and a beginner is wise to keep to slow, easy breathing. The verse does not promise that the bills shrink or the day's worry leaves. It promises only a steadier place from which to sit with it, and it is not a treatment for any illness.
