Meaning · English

Let him draw Om up from the heart, unbroken as the fibre inside a lotus stalk, ringing like a bell. Lifting it on the breath, let him then bring it to rest again in the tone. Joined with Om in this way, let him practise the breath alone, ten times, at each of the three junctures of the day. Within a month, he has mastered the breath.

Three words carry the teaching. Pranava is Om, the sacred syllable, named for the sound that goes on sounding. Prana is breath, the moving life in the body, from the root an, to breathe. Svara is a tone, a held note. Krishna asks Uddhava for one sound, drawn up from the heart and kept unbroken. He gives two pictures: the fine fibre that stretches without snapping when a lotus stalk is pulled apart, and a bell whose note rings on after the strike. The breath carries the sound upward. Then it comes to rest again in the tone, so the sound ends where it began, in one even note. The second verse adds the measure. Om and breath are practised together. Ten rounds, at dawn, midday and dusk. Within a month, Krishna says, the practitioner has mastered the breath, which is what jitanila means: one who has conquered the wind. It comes here because Uddhava has asked how a seeker should meditate. Before the form of Krishna is placed in the heart, Krishna steadies the one who will hold it. A restless breath scatters attention. Sound and breath together give the mind something to follow that does not break. The commentators read the lotus fibre as the image of continuity: no gap between one moment of the sound and the next. What Krishna asks is small, regular and unhurried: the same ten rounds, three times a day, for a month.

Honey lifted from a jar on a spoon falls in one thin, unbroken ribbon, with no drops and no gaps, until the last of it slides off. Om on the out-breath is meant to run like that: one even thread from the heart, with no stops, ending only when the breath does.

1. Choose three fixed times today: morning, midday, evening. Sit upright anywhere quiet. 2. Breathe in gently. On the out-breath, say or hum Om softly as one long note, like a bell fading, with no breaks in it. 3. Let the sound and the breath finish together, then rest one moment in silence. 4. Do ten rounds, about three minutes. Notice where the sound wavers or breaks. 5. Stop and breathe normally if you feel dizzy. Repeat for a week.

A man sits in a hospital corridor while his father's scan is read. His chest is tight, his breathing short and high, and his mind runs ahead to the worst. Krishna's instruction gives him something to do with his next three minutes. He breathes in, then lets out one long, even Om, and he follows that single sound from start to finish. A slow, extended out-breath is something the body answers; ordinary experience confirms that a long exhale loosens the chest, and that giving the mind one thing to follow quiets the running ahead. Ten rounds is short enough to finish even in a corridor. Done three times a day, it also becomes a habit the body knows before the hard moments arrive. The text's own promise, mastery of the breath within a month, is a claim about steady practice, and the practice is gentle: there is no holding of breath here. It does not change what the scan will say, ease the fear for long, or replace a doctor for anyone with a breathing or heart condition.
