Meaning · English

Krishna says: picture the lotus of the heart inside the body. Its stalk rises upward, and its face hangs down. Imagine it turned to face upward and opened, with eight petals and a seed-pod at the centre. In that pod set the sun, then the moon, then fire, one above the other. In the middle of the fire, remember my form. This is the meditation that brings good.

Krishna gives Uddhava the place where the mind should rest. Three words carry it. Hridaya-pundarika is the lotus of the heart: hridaya, the heart, and pundarika, a white lotus. Karnika is the seed-pod at the lotus's centre. Dhyana is meditation, from a root meaning to hold in thought. The picture goes step by step. First, see a lotus in the chest, stalk up, face drooping down, like a flower that has not yet opened. Then turn it upright and let it open: eight petals, a pod in the middle. Then stack three lights in the pod: sun, moon, fire. In the middle of the fire, call to mind Krishna's own form. The commentators take all of this as held in imagination, not as a physical organ. Krishna calls this meditation mangala, auspicious, meaning it carries good with it. The reason for the order is that the earlier verses steadied the seat, the breath and the sound of Om. A steadied mind now needs somewhere to go, and Krishna gives it a small, built place with one centre. The listener is asked to build the picture slowly, piece by piece, and rest on the form at its centre.

A flower hangs its head on its stalk through the night. In the morning it lifts, opens its petals and shows the small bright centre. The heart in the verse is that flower: turned down, then raised and opened, so the one at its centre can be seen.

1. Choose a quiet spot and sit for three minutes, once today. 2. With eyes closed, picture a lotus in your chest, its face hanging down. Turn it upright and let eight petals open. 3. Place a small light in the centre. Hold it there. Do not hurry to add more. 4. When your mind wanders, notice where it went, then return to the petals.

A man sits in a hospital corridor while his wife is in surgery. He taps his knee, checks the clock, and runs the worst outcomes again. Nothing he does will speed the door opening. The verse offers his mind a task with a clear order. Turn the lotus up. Open eight petals. Set the pod, then the sun, moon and fire, then one form at the centre. Each step is small and concrete, and each has one place to look. A mind given a simple, ordered picture to build has less room for the loop of dread, and ordinary experience bears this out: a busy hand or a counted breath quiets a racing head. The lotus, its petals and the lights are the text's own pictures, and Krishna's form at the centre is the point of the exercise. The teaching does not promise that the surgery goes well, and it does not remove fear. It cannot replace the doctors, or a friend sitting beside him. It gives the waiting mind somewhere steady to stand.
