Meaning · English
Even, calm, with a lovely face and four long, graceful arms; a beautiful neck, fair cheeks, a pure smile; matched ears bright with shining sea-creature earrings. Golden-yellow cloth on a body dark as a rain cloud; the Shrivatsa mark on his chest, the home of Shri. Conch, discus, mace and lotus in his hands, a garland of forest flowers, anklets gleaming on his feet, the Kaustubha jewel's light about him. A radiant crown, bracelets, a waist-cord, armlets. Beautiful in every limb, heart-stealing, gracious, with kind eyes, very tender. Let him meditate on this, setting his mind on each limb.
Three words carry the passage. Abhidhyayet means to meditate fully. It comes from dhyai, to think upon steadily, and the prefix points the thought toward one object. Sarvanga means all the limbs: the mind is set on each part in turn, not on a vague whole. Prasada means grace, from a root for becoming clear and calm. It names the gentle, welcoming look in Krishna's eyes. The plain sense is a walk down his body. Krishna begins with the face: even, still, lovely, with a clean smile. Then four long arms, the neck, the cheeks, and earrings shaped like sea creatures, one matching the other. His cloth is yellow-gold and his body dark like a rain cloud. On his chest is the Shrivatsa mark, where Shri, Lakshmi, dwells. His hands hold conch, discus, mace and lotus. He wears a forest garland, anklets, the glow of the Kaustubha jewel, a crown, bracelets, a waist-cord and armlets. Every limb is beautiful, the whole form draws the heart, the eyes are kind, and the body is very tender. The reason is in the verses around it. Krishna has just taught breath and the lotus of the heart, and the mind still needs something to rest on. A mind told only to be still keeps fidgeting. Given something it loves, it settles. So Krishna gives his own form, feature by feature. The commentators treat the listing as a way to keep a restless mind busy with what it loves. The teaching asks for slow attention, one limb at a time, with the whole mind on each.
A mother stands on a railway platform as her son's train is about to leave. She does not glance at him. She takes in his eyes, his hair, the way he holds his bag, one thing after another, to carry it away. Attention resting part by part on a loved form is how the mind is asked to rest on Krishna.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes where it is quiet. Use a picture of Krishna, or simply recall one. 2. Look at the face only: the calm, the gentle smile. Stay for a few breaths. 3. Move to the next feature, then the next: arms, hands, garland, feet. Give each a few breaths. 4. When your mind wanders, go back to the last feature you remember. Afterwards, notice how long it stayed.
A security guard at a factory gate sits through the 3 a.m. stretch, thumbing through his phone. Nothing he reads stays with him, and his mind feels scattered and tired. The verse would change this in small steps. He puts the phone down and fixes his attention on one picture, a face he loves, and goes through it slowly: forehead, eyes, smile. When the thought of tomorrow's bills slips in, he returns to the last feature he saw. The text's claim is that a mind given one beloved form to rest on grows quieter than a mind given everything at once. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind jumping between many things tires faster than one held on a single thing. The verse does not promise sleep, and it does not lift the weariness of night work or the worry behind it. If sleeplessness or low mood keeps returning, a doctor is the right person to see, and the verse does not stand in for one.
