Gathering the Scattered Mind
Bhagavata Purana 11.14.42
Meaning · English
Let the steady one draw the senses back from the things they chase, using the mind to do it. Then let him lead that mind too, with the intellect as its charioteer, wholly into me. Let him gather the mind that spreads in every direction and hold it in one place. Let him not think of anything else again, but fix his thought on my face, softly smiling.
Four words carry the teaching. Indriya are the senses, the doors through which the world comes in. Buddhi is the intellect, from budh, to wake: the part that judges and decides. Citta is the stuff of thought, the mind's restless surface. Dharana, here the verb for holding, comes from dhri, to hold or carry. Krishna tells Uddhava to work in order. First the senses are pulled back from what they chase: sights, sounds, tastes. The mind does this pulling. But the mind itself wanders, so the intellect takes the reins like a charioteer and steers it toward Krishna. The mind, he says, is spread over everything at once. It has to be collected and held in a single place. Once it is held there, no other thought is entertained. The single place is his face, gently smiling. This follows his picture of the heart-lotus and the whole bodily form. A form is a lot to hold, so he narrows the aim to one face, and a smile makes it a welcome rather than a strain. The teaching asks for effort that is steady and kind. The intellect drives, and the mind is brought back each time it strays, without any quarrel with it.
A lantern left on a yard table lights everything faintly: the wall, the washing, the dog. Put a shade around it and turn it down over one page, and that page is suddenly clear to read. The lantern is the mind, the shade is the intellect, and the page is the smiling face.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet corner with your phone in another room. 2. Close your eyes and picture one face that has ever met you with a warm smile, or the face of the one you pray to. 3. When your thoughts run to tomorrow's tasks or a sound outside, notice it and return to the face. Do this gently, as you would call a child back to the table. 4. Count how many times you returned. Do not judge the number.
A woman sits outside an operating theatre at night while her father is in surgery. She checks her phone, reads the same headline twice, then her mind jumps to the worst outcomes one after another. She is everywhere except the chair she is in. The verse suggests a plain sequence. She puts the phone face down, which is the senses drawn back from what they chase. She notices the mind running and says to herself that it is running, which is the intellect taking the reins. Then she gives it one steady thing to rest on: a smiling face, her father's or the one she prays to. The mind will leave again, and she brings it back again, as often as needed. Ordinary experience agrees on a small point: a mind pulled in ten directions at once feels more frightened than one resting on a single thing. The teaching does not promise that the surgery goes well, and it does not take away fear or grief. It is also no substitute for the surgeon, or for a doctor if the fear grows too heavy to carry alone.
