When the mind has found its footing there, he should draw it up and hold it in the open sky. Then he should leave even that behind, rise to me, and think of nothing at all. With the mind steadied in this way, he sees me, the Self of everything, as his own self within himself, light joined to light. In meditation this intense, the mind of the yogi who stays joined to me goes quickly to nirvana. The confusion of things, of knowing and of doing falls away.

Krishna keeps climbing. First the mind rests on his form. Then he asks Uddhava to lift it from the form and hold it in open space, wide and without edges. Then he asks for one step more: leave even that, rise to Krishna himself, and think of nothing. The images were a ladder, and the ladder is not the roof. Three words carry the passage. Samahita means steadied or placed together, from sam (together) and dha (to set down). It is a mind set down in one place. Jyoti is light. Krishna says the light of the Self meets the light that is himself, and nothing stands between them. Nirvana means blown out, as a flame is. Here what goes out is the restless burning of the mind, not the person. The last line names what drops away: the sense of separate things, of someone knowing them, and of someone acting on them. The commentators read it as the whole machinery of seeming duality going quiet. The teaching answers a question the form-meditation leaves open: where does all this holding lead? Krishna's answer is that it leads to him as the Self, closer than any picture. He asks Uddhava to practise with force, since the verse says the meditation must be intense, and to hold nothing back for himself, even a refined image.

A man climbs a ladder to reach his roof. Every rung matters on the way up, and he grips each one. At the top he steps off onto the roof and leaves the ladder leaning on the wall. The form of Krishna is the ladder, and the roof is Krishna himself, beyond any picture.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and look at one steady thing, such as a lamp flame, for the first three. 2. Close your eyes and let the picture go. Rest without following any thought for the last two minutes. 3. When a thought pulls you off, notice it and return to the rest. Do not fight it. 4. Stop and open your eyes if you feel uneasy.

A mother has just got her toddler to sleep. She sits on the edge of the bed, and her mind starts running the list: the bills, tomorrow's lunch, what she said at the school gate. She is exhausted, and still she cannot rest. The verse asks for a different order. First she gives the mind one thing to hold, her child's breathing or a lamp's flame. The list loses its grip because the mind has only one place to stand. Ordinary experience bears this out: a mind pulled in ten directions tires faster than one resting on a single thing. Then, as the text teaches, she lets even that one thing go and rests without thinking anything. That is the step beyond. The verse does not promise that tomorrow's bills shrink, that grief lightens, or that she can skip a doctor if sleeplessness lasts for weeks. What it describes is a mind that has been held steady and then set down. The text's own larger claim, that the self joins the light it came from, is Krishna's teaching and is offered as his.
