Understanding, Attention, Purity

Katha Upanishad 1.3.8

Meaning · English

The one who has discernment, whose mind stays attentive and who is always clean in heart and conduct, reaches that place. From there he is not born again.

Yama is answering Nachiketas, the boy who waited three nights at his door. He names three qualities. The first is vijnana, from vi, apart, and jna, to know: knowing that tells one thing from another, the lasting from the passing. The second is samanaska, having a mind with you. The mind is present and attending, not pulled off after every sound. The third is shuci, clean. Yama says the person is always clean, so this is steady purity of heart and conduct, not a state reached now and then. Yama says this person reaches tat padam, that place. Pada is a foot or a step, so it is where the road ends. And from there the person is not born again. The reason comes from the verse just before, where Yama describes the opposite person, who lacks all three and keeps circling through births. The three qualities are what make a person fit for the journey. Shankara reads that place as the highest state, Brahman, the vast reality behind all things. He takes the discernment as knowledge of the Self, and the not being born again as freedom from returning. Yama asks of the listener a knowing mind, an attending mind and a clean one, together and always.

Picture someone carrying a clean glass filled to the brim across a room. They know what they hold, they watch it with every step, and nothing dirty has touched it. Discernment, attention and purity are those three things in one person. The far side of the room is the place the verse names.

1. Choose one ordinary walk today, to a shop, a bus stop or another room, and make it five minutes long. Keep your attention on the walking and notice each time it wanders. 2. Before one meal or conversation, ask yourself: what is lasting here, and what is only pleasant for now? Answer in one plain sentence. 3. Tonight, find one small thing from the day that was not quite honest or clean, such as a hurried word or a small shortcut. Say it quietly to yourself and decide how to set it right tomorrow.

A woman stands on a railway platform at night. Her train has been cancelled, she has been awake since dawn, and she is about to snap at the clerk behind the glass. The clerk did not cause this. Yama's three qualities would work in that moment one after another. First, she asks which things matter here: the next train, a place to sit, a message home. Shouting is not among them. Second, she brings her attention back to the present from the dread of missing tomorrow's meeting. Third, she speaks to the clerk without any small lie or cruelty she would regret on the way home. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, so she may also simply sit and drink water first. The verse does not promise that the train will come, that her tiredness will lift, or that the clerk will be kind. It states the road Yama gives Nachiketas, and a platform is only one small stretch of it.
