Why the Journey Repeats

Katha Upanishad 1.3.7

Meaning · English

One who has no discernment, whose attention is scattered and who is always impure, does not reach that place. He is carried instead into the cycle of being born again and again.

Yama names three faults and one result. The first word, vijnana, joins vi, apart, with jna, to know. It is knowing one thing from another, the right road from the wrong one. Without it a person cannot tell what is worth wanting. The second, amanaska, is a-manas: without mind. It means the mind is not gathered or present. It is somewhere else. The third, ashuci, is not clean, and shuci means pure. The fault is a mind and conduct fouled by grudge, greed and carelessness. Yama says always, so he means a settled habit, not one bad afternoon. The result has two halves. Such a person does not reach that place, the padam, which literally means a step or a footing. This is the goal Yama has been describing, called the highest place of Vishnu in verse 9. Instead he enters samsara, from sam, together, and sri, to move: a going around, the cycle of birth and death. The reason comes from the chariot. A driver who cannot tell road from ditch, who is not watching, and whose carriage is fouled, does not arrive. He keeps travelling and keeps coming back. Shankara reads the impurity as the stain left by desire and aversion, and the place as the Self, known only through knowledge.

A driver circles a roundabout in rain with a mud-streaked windscreen, half listening to a phone call, unable to read the signs. He passes his exit again and again. The muddy glass is impurity, the missed signs are lack of discernment, the half-listening is a scattered mind, and the circling is rebirth.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for five minutes with paper and a pen. 2. Write one choice from today you made without really knowing why. Notice whether it was a clear decision or a habit. 3. Write one moment when your attention was elsewhere while your body was doing something else, such as eating or listening. 4. Write one grudge or craving that clouded the day. Name it plainly and stop there.

A woman is cooking dinner. Her hands chop onions while her head replays a quarrel from the morning, and the rice catches on the bottom of the pot. Yama's three faults are all in that kitchen. She does not see what matters, since the quarrel is over and the meal is not. Her attention is somewhere else. And an old resentment is fouling the evening. Seen this way, the next steps are small. She notices her mind has left the room. She names the grudge for what it is. She puts her hands and eyes back on the pot. She may find she still has to settle the quarrel, but she can do it clearly, later, and not by burning dinner. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, resentful, distracted person repeats the same mistakes. The teaching does not promise the quarrel will end, or that grief and hurt will lift. What it offers is a plain account of why a person keeps circling, and what clearer seeing, steadier attention and cleaner motives would change.
