A Steady Mind Obeyed

Katha Upanishad 1.3.6

Meaning · English

But the one who has discernment, whose mind is kept steady and joined to its purpose at all times, finds his senses obedient to him, the way well-schooled horses answer their driver.

Three words carry the verse. Vijnana is knowing that tells things apart: vi means apart, jna means to know. It is the clear sight that sees what is wanted and what is only tempting. Yukta means yoked, joined, from the root yuj. A mind that is yukta is harnessed to one aim and does not wander off. Vashya means under one's will, willing to be led. Yama tells Nachiketas that a person with discernment, whose mind stays joined to its aim at all times, has senses that follow him as good horses follow a driver. Notice the word for always. Steadiness that comes and goes does not count. Yama gives this as the reason a person can travel the road he has been describing. Before it, the senses pull in every direction. After it, they go where the driver points. Shankara reads the mind here as the reins, held firmly by the discerning intellect, so the order of command runs from clear seeing, through the mind, to the senses. The verse asks nothing harsh of the senses. It describes horses that have been trained and now cooperate. What it asks of the listener is to look for the source of the order: clear sight first, then a mind held to it, then the senses.

A farmer walks behind a pair of bullocks he has worked with for years. He barely touches the rope. They turn at his voice and stop when he stops. Discernment is the farmer who knows where the field ends, the steady mind is the rope in his hand, and the senses are the bullocks that go where they are led.

1. Choose one ordinary sense-pull you notice daily, such as reaching for your phone or a second helping, and decide tonight what you actually want from the next hour. 2. Tomorrow, when the pull comes, wait through ten slow breaths before acting. Do not fight it. Only wait. 3. Notice whether the pull fades, grows, or changes shape. 4. At bedtime, note once whether your hand followed your aim or your habit. Repeat for a week.

A woman sits at her brother's table the night after their father's funeral. He makes a sharp remark about the debts their father left. Her reply is already in her mouth, and her hands are tight around the glass. In that moment the verse asks for the order it describes. She first sees what she wants from this evening: to get through it without a new wound between them. Then she keeps her attention on that aim, a breath at a time, instead of on the insult. Then her voice, face and hands follow it. She may answer softly, or say that she will talk tomorrow. Ordinary experience confirms one small thing here: a person who is tired and hungry finds this order much harder to keep, so rest and food are part of the steadiness. The verse does not promise the grief will lessen, or that her brother will soften, or that the urge will never rise again. It promises only that the one who sees clearly and holds steady is the one who gives the orders.
