Katha Upanishad 1.3.5
Meaning · English
Whoever lacks understanding, whose mind is never held steady, finds that his senses will not obey him, like the wild horses of a careless charioteer.
Three words carry it. Vijnana is discernment: vi is apart, jna is to know, so it means knowing one thing from another, what helps from what only pulls. Yukta means yoked, joined, held in place, and ayukta is its opposite, so the mind is loose and unattached to anything steady. Avashya means not under one's will, from vasha, control. Yama is speaking to Nachiketas, and he says that a person without discernment has a mind that is never held, and so the senses run where they like. They are like spoiled horses under a driver who does not know how to drive. The word sada, always, matters. The failure is a standing habit, not one bad afternoon. Yama gives this reason: the road to the goal Nachiketas asked about runs through the driver, and a team that will not obey cannot be taken anywhere on purpose. He asks the listener to look at the driver first, not at the horses. Shankara reads the discernment here as the intellect, the charioteer, whose absence leaves the mind-reins slack and the senses free to drag the traveller along.
A small child holds the leash of a large dog. A squirrel darts across the lawn and the dog bolts, pulling the child over the grass, hands burning on the cord. The dog is not wicked. The child cannot hold it. The dog is the senses, the leash is the mind, and the child is a driver without the skill to hold it.
1. Choose one pull you know well, such as reaching for your phone the moment you wake, or a snack when you are not hungry. 2. When it comes today, wait ten slow breaths before acting. Notice where the pull sits in your body and how long it lasts. 3. Then decide. Follow it or not, but as a choice. 4. At night, think back and count how many times the reins slipped and how many times you held them.
A woman reaches the end of a long shift and joins the checkout queue. The sweets sit at her eye level. She is tired, and her hand is already moving. Yama's teaching applies at that moment in steps. First, there is a pull, and it came from the eyes and the tongue, not from a decision. Second, someone has to be driving, and the one who holds the reins is the part that can tell what she wants from what is merely tugging at her. Third, that part has to be awake before the hand moves, not afterwards. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness weakens restraint, which is why the reins are lost at the end of a hard day more often than in the morning. Yama's claim is stronger than a tip, since he says an unheld mind leaves the senses in charge always. The verse does not promise that the pull will vanish, or that one held moment settles anything. It does not replace help for someone whose cravings have grown larger than a checkout queue.
