Freed, and Whole Alone

Shiva Sutras 3.34

Meaning · English

But the one who is freed from that stands alone, wholly himself.

Take the words one at a time. Tad means "that", the pair just spoken of, pleasure and pain in Bhaskara's reading. Vimukta means freed, from a root meaning to loosen a knot. Tu is "but". It turns the sentence toward a contrast with the person described next. Kevali comes from kevala, which means only, unmixed, nothing added. So the sutra says: the one who has been loosened from pleasure and pain is kevali, left with consciousness alone. Caitanya, consciousness, is what remains when nothing is mixed into it. Nothing is lost. The person is not emptied, only unmixed. This follows from the teaching before it, that pleasure and pain come and go, and that the bond lies in being tied to their coming and going. It belongs to the anava way, the way of the individual's own effort, where a person works with the limited self, step by step. It is not the shambhava way of sudden recognition, or the shakta way of inner practice through thought. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that this freed one is untouched even by the faint traces such experiences leave behind. The commentators read the word as describing a person who stays wholly consciousness while living.

Rain runs across a window pane in streaks, and the light changes from bright to grey. The glass stays clear and stays glass. The weather is pleasure and pain passing over. The freed one is the pane, not marked by what crosses it.

1. Choose one ordinary pleasure today, such as a first sip of tea, and one small irritation, such as a delay. 2. When each arrives, pause for three breaths and name it silently: "pleasure" or "pain". 3. Notice that something in you is aware of it, and that this awareness is neither the pleasure nor the pain. 4. Before sleep, recall one moment of each and notice how each one passed.
