The Self Made of Deeds

Shiva Sutras 3.35

Meaning · English

But the one struck back by delusion is a self made of action.

Three words carry this sutra. Moha is delusion, from a root meaning to be dulled or confused. Here it is not a passing mistake. It is forgetting one's own nature. Pratisamhata means struck back, drawn in, shut up small. Karma is action, and atma is the self. The sutra says that a person drawn in by moha is karmatma, a self made of action. Taken in order: the word 'but' answers the previous sutra. There the free one stands complete in himself. Here is the other case. Because the person has forgotten what he is, he takes himself to be what he does. He is the doer, the one who earns, who gains, who loses. Every good deed and every bad one then sticks to him as who he is. Shiva teaches this to show the knot before the loosening. It rests on the sutras before it, which describe the knower of the self freed from this narrowness. It belongs to the anava way, the way of the small, limited self working through effort and deed. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes it as a plain account of the ordinary bound person, whose sense of self is formed by his acts. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that for even such a person, when Shiva's free power descends, freedom can rise on its own.

A man has worn the same work uniform for so many years that he introduces himself by his job and no longer remembers any other name. Ask who he is and he lists what he does. The uniform is the deeds; the forgotten person under it is the self.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and list what you did today, task by task. 2. After each item, notice whether a sense of 'this is what I am' comes with it, such as 'I was useful' or 'I failed'. 3. Say the list aloud once more, then pause and notice that the one listening is not any item on it. 4. Tomorrow, when someone asks what you do, notice the small pull to answer as if that were all of you.
