Another World Made

Shiva Sutras 3.36

Meaning · English

When difference is set aside, there is the making of another creation.

Three terms carry the sutra. Bheda is difference: the split between me and the world, built from body, breath and the small sense of "I". Tiraskara is pushing aside, putting something behind one. Sarga is creation, and antara means other, so sargantara is another creation. Karmatva is the state of being a work, something done or made. Plain sense: when the yogi sets difference aside, another creation becomes the work of that yogi. The sutras before this one describe a person freed from the bond and no longer deluded by it. Here Shiva teaches what stands behind that freedom: the world is a making, and the one who no longer sees himself as cut off shares in the making. This belongs to the anava way, the path of effort through the individual's own mind, body and breath. Even so, the sutra points toward what the other ways reach more directly. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes it to mean that the yogi, having dropped the limited sense of self, shares in Shiva's own power to create. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that the yogi is shown as one who forms and measures things as he wishes, and that this is no impossibility, since the yogi is a maker by nature.

A child who thinks the sandcastle belongs to the beach stands apart from it. Once he knows his own hands built it, he can knock it down and shape another. Difference put aside is knowing the hands; the new castle is the other creation.

1. Once today, when you feel sharply that something outside is simply "there" against you, such as a crowded street or a hard task, stop for ten seconds. 2. Notice how much of that picture is your own gathering of it: your mood, your expectations, your name for it. 3. Do not try to change anything. Only see that the scene arrives through you. 4. In the evening, recall that one moment and write a line about what you noticed.
