Dreams Show the Power
Shiva Sutras 3.37
Meaning · English
The power of the instrument is known from one's own experience.
Three words carry this sutra. Karana is the instrument, the means by which anything gets done: mind, senses, body. Shakti is power, the capacity to act. Anubhava is experience that comes first-hand, not borrowed from anyone. Svatah means from itself, from one's own side. So the sutra says the power of the instruments is known by one's own experience. Bhaskara points to dreams and imagination. In them a whole scene appears, with a seer and things seen, and nothing outside has supplied it. The mind made it with its own power, and every reader has watched this happen. Why Shiva teaches it here: 3.35 and 3.36 spoke of being tied to deeds by delusion, and of another making when difference is covered over. This sutra gives the ground for that. The power to make is not a claim. It is already felt. It belongs to anava, the way of small effort, which works through the instruments themselves and starts from what one can verify. Bhaskara adds that if this making is held firmly, it can become a making shared by all. He also says the power is Shakti as freedom, hidden by one's own maya and meant to be roused. The commentators agree that the instruments are Shiva's own power at work in a limited form.
A cook of many years does not need a manual to know her knife. She knows its edge by the feel in her hand, from cutting. The knife's power is learned only by using it. The mind's power to make is learned the same way, by watching it work.
1. Tonight before sleep, spend two minutes recalling a dream or a daydream. Notice that the place and the people in it were all made by your own mind. 2. Once during the day, when a worry starts, stop for a breath. Notice the picture your mind has just built around it. 3. Ask where the picture came from. Do not try to change it. Only notice that the making was yours.
