Life Within Every State
Shiva Sutras 3.38
Meaning · English
Life is breathed through the three steps, beginning with the first.
Three words carry this sutra. Tripada: tri is three, pada is a step or phase. Bhaskara takes these as the beginning, middle and end that every state of mind passes through. Adi: the first, the start. Anuprana: prana is breath, life; anu is along, through. So it is a breathing of life through something, step by step. The states are waking, dream and deep sleep. Each one rises, holds and dissolves. Bhaskara teaches that turya, the fourth, is the ground beneath all three. Maya, the veil, covers it, yet it flashes for a moment, like lightning, inside each taste of pleasure or pain in every state. The sutra asks the practitioner to hold attention on that flash, so the same life quickens his own self. Why Shiva teaches it here: the sutras just before speak of the instruments of knowing and of how their power is known from one's own experience. This sutra applies that to the phases of experience itself. It belongs to anava upaya, the way of small, deliberate effort on ordinary states. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini, as far as the commentators agree, reads it as finding the fourth already present in the three, not as reaching for something far away.
Beads on a string. You see only the beads, each with its own colour and shape. The thread runs through every one, and shows in the small gaps between. The three states are the beads. Turya is the thread, present throughout and noticed in the gaps.
1. Choose one ordinary moment today, such as the first sip of tea or the first step out of the door. Watch its start for a few seconds. 2. Stay with the same moment as it settles, then as it ends. Notice the gap where one phase gives way to the next. 3. Tonight, in the minute before sleep, watch the last thing you are aware of as the day fades. 4. Do this for a week. Simply note what you see.
