Poise Carried Outward

Shiva Sutras 3.39

Meaning · English

As it stands in the mind's steadiness, so also in the body, the senses and outer things.

Three key words carry this sutra. Citta is the mind, the stuff of thought and feeling. Sthiti is standing, a settled abiding. Bahya is the outer: whatever lies beyond the mind. The ending vat means 'like', so the sutra is a comparison. Body (sharira), senses (karana) and outer things (bahya) are to stand as the mind stands when it is settled. Shiva teaches this after the sutras on the senses' power and on turya, the fourth state, flowing through waking, dream and sleep. Having named that state, he now asks where it shows. It shows in the body, the senses and the world they touch, not only in quiet. This belongs to anava upaya, the way that works through the limited self's own tools: body, senses, outer things. Here those tools are not left behind. They are steadied. Pleasure and pain arrive through exactly these doors. If the steadiness of the mind reaches them, what comes in does not shake the one who stands. Bhaskara's Varttika reads it this way: even when the mind turns outward, body, senses and objects take on the nature of the inner state. If the inner state is not touched, he says, the old sense of smallness returns. The commentators agree that the steadiness is meant to travel.

A person carries a brimming bowl of water across a courtyard. At rest the hand is steady. Walking, the hand stays steady too, and nothing spills. The bowl is the mind's steadiness, and the walking is the body, the senses and the day's outer things.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, walking to a shop or eating a meal. Plan about ten minutes for it. 2. Before starting, pause for three slow breaths and notice how the mind feels when it is quiet. 3. Begin the task. Every so often, check whether that quiet is still there in your hands, your eyes and your hearing. 4. When a pleasant or unpleasant moment arrives, such as a taste, a noise or a sore foot, notice whether the steadiness holds or drops.
