Craving and the Drift
Shiva Sutras 3.40
Meaning · English
From craving comes the going out, for the one who is being carried along.
Three words carry this sutra. Abhilasha is craving: a longing for something one feels one lacks. Bahir-gati is going outward. Bahih means outside, and gati means movement. Samvahya is the one being carried along, like a load taken from place to place and not walking by choice. Put together, the sutra says that a person who feels incomplete is pushed by craving toward outside things, and so is carried along. The attention leaves home and runs to objects. The sutra does not say craving is wicked. It says what craving does: it drives the going out. Shiva teaches this after the two sutras before it, which show the steady inner state reaching the body, the senses and outer things. This sutra shows what breaks that steadiness. It belongs to anava upaya, the way of the small individual working with his own mind and senses, which is why it looks at the wanting that moves him. The other two ways are shambhava, which begins from Shiva directly, and shakta, which works through pure thought. The commentators agree on this sense. Bhaskara adds one thing: when Shiva's grace descends and a person rests in his own nature, craving has nothing to stand on, and he does not go out at all.
A hungry man walks through a market and is pulled from stall to stall by every smell. After a full meal he walks the same lane and stands still. The pull was never in the stalls. It was in the hunger, which is the craving that sends attention out.
1. Today, when you reach for your phone, a snack or a screen without needing it, wait three breaths before touching it. 2. In that pause, name what felt missing in one word, such as tired, bored or lonely. 3. Notice whether the reach came from that lack. 4. Once this evening, sit five minutes with nothing in your hands and watch what the wanting does when it is not fed.
