The Song of Kacha
Yoga Vasishtha 4.58
The story · English
Vasishtha turned to Rama and said, 'Let me tell you about a song sung long ago by Kacha, the son of Vrihaspati, who was the teacher of the gods.' Kacha lived in a quiet grove on Mount Meru, the golden mountain, so called because its hills were rich with gold mines. There, through his devotion, he found his spirit at rest in the Supreme soul. His mind was full of divine knowledge, like a cup of nectar drunk to the last drop. After that, the visible world, with all its things built from the five elements, gave him no satisfaction at all. He sat rapt in the vision of the Holy Spirit and saw nothing else beside himself. Then, quietly and with great feeling, he began to speak to himself.
'What is there for me to do or to refuse, to take or to cast away?' Kacha said. 'Where is there to go, and where is there to hold back from going, when the Divine Spirit fills this whole world the way floodwater fills everything in the great deluge?' He went on, thinking aloud. Pleasure and pain, he saw, belong to the soul. The sky and all its directions sit inside the soul's vastness, the way a small room sits inside a great hall. 'Knowing that all things are full of the holy spirit,' he said, 'I forget my pains, and I let them sink into my spirit.' He spoke without hurry, like a man putting down a heavy load.
Kacha kept looking, and kept speaking. 'The spirit is inside every body and outside it,' he said. 'It is above and below and on every side. Here and there and everywhere it is the same one spirit, and there is no place where it is not.' He turned the thought over once more. The spirit lives everywhere, and everything lives in the spirit. All things are one with it, and he himself stood in that same spirit. Nothing was left over that could be called far away. Wherever his mind went, it found the one thing it was already resting in.
'There is nothing that knows and nothing that does not know which is not the spirit,' Kacha said. 'All is spirit, and so am I. It fills all space, and it sits in every place.' Then he spoke of his own state. He was as full of that spirit and its bliss that nothing in him was left dry, just as the great flood leaves no corner of the world uncovered. So Kacha mused in his bower on the golden mountain, with no one to hear him and no one needed. When the words ran out, he gave voice to one sound, the oldest and simplest of all, the syllable Om.
Om rang out on every side, like a bell struck once and left to ring. Kacha sounded the first part, the open vowel o, and then the nasal n, which sits on top of it like a tuft of hair. He stayed in meditation on the spirit, not picturing it as inside him or outside him, but as the soul that pervades everything. And so, Rama, Kacha went on musing and chanting his holy hymn. He was freed from the heaviness of the flesh, and his spirit grew fine and light, like the breath of the wind. His soul was as clear as the autumn sky after the dark clouds of the rains have scattered.
