Outer Light Is Darkness
Vijnana Bhairava 86
Meaning · English
Whatever is only partly known brings two-ness. Light from outside is darkness again. Knowing the world and all that begins with it as Bhairava's own form, you carry endless light.
Three ideas are packed in here. Dvaita is two-ness: a knower on one side, a thing known on the other. Kiñcij-jñāta means known only a little, known in part. Whatever is known that way leaves something over, and so it keeps the split in place. Bāhya-āloka is light that comes from outside, light you see by. Tamas is darkness. The verse says outer light is darkness again. It shows objects, but it leaves the seer out of the picture, so it is a kind of dark. Then the turn: viśva-ādi bhairava rūpa. The world, and everything that starts with it, is Bhairava's form. Knowing it that way is not partial. Ananta-prakāśa is light without limit, light that does not depend on a lamp. The doorway is the ordinary moment of seeing. Every glance is already split into seer and seen, and already partial. Opened from inside, the same glance is recognised as the one awareness showing itself. Nothing is added. What was taken as an outside object is taken as Bhairava's form.
1. Sit where you can see an ordinary scene: a room, a window, a street. 2. Look without picking out any one thing. Let the whole field of sight be present at once. 3. When you catch yourself knowing one thing a little, naming it or judging it, notice the two-ness: you here, it there. 4. Take the whole scene, and the world beyond it, as Bhairava's form. Stay with that knowing, not with a picture. 5. When the mind wanders, notice the light you see by is outside, then return to the form. 6. Stop when the looking tires.
The tradition's account: the mind lives by grasping one partly known thing after another. Each grasp keeps two-ness alive. When the whole field of seeing is taken as Bhairava's form, grasping has nothing separate left to hold. The support drops, and awareness is left knowing itself as endless light. What a sitter tends to notice: first, the habit of treating sight as a window onto separate things. Looking at a wall or a lamp, attention keeps leaping to the object and naming it. Trying to hold the whole visible field as one form feels like a small effort at first, then like a loosening around the eyes and forehead. Small signs it is working: naming slows, the edges of things seem less sharp, and the one who is looking becomes easier to sense. Usual ways it goes wrong: forcing a feeling of unity, staring until the eyes strain, or inventing a glow. Dullness gets mistaken for stillness. The text asks for knowing, not for a state.
