Meaning · English

In me there is no inner making of mind and the rest. Let this be held within. When thought-constructs are absent, one is freed from thought-constructs.

Three words carry the verse. Citta is the mind as a whole: the part that gathers, remembers and thinks. The words "and the rest" take in whatever else works alongside it. Antahkriti means inner making or inner doing, the ongoing work of producing thoughts. Vikalpa is a thought that cuts one whole into alternatives: this and that, mine and not mine, yes and no. It is a construct, something put together. The verse then runs in order. First comes a statement: in me there is no inner making of mind. Then an instruction to hold that statement inwardly, to let it be the ground you stand on. Then the result: constructs are absent, and so one is freed from constructs. The logic is plain. Constructs need a maker, and the maker keeps them going. If, in the place one actually stands, no making is going on, there is nothing left to feed them. Bhairava is not asking the thoughts to be forced out. He asks the sitter to see that the making is not found in the self he is describing. Thoughts that nobody is producing run down by themselves. The doorway is the ordinary moment of thinking, opened from inside: the same mind, looked at from where it is not being made.

1. Sit where you will not be disturbed, spine upright without strain, hands resting. 2. Let the eyes soften or close. Let thoughts come as they do, and do not push at them. 3. Say inwardly once, slowly: in me there is no making of mind. Then stop saying it and rest in what it points to. 4. When a thought arises, notice it without following it. Look for who is making it, and let the looking be brief. 5. When you catch yourself telling a story, return to the plain fact that no making is found within, and begin again. 6. Stop when the time you set is over. Open the eyes slowly.

The tradition's account runs like this. The mind's movement is a making, and it persists only while the sitter takes the maker to be himself. Hold the thought that no such making is in him, and the support the thoughts rested on drops away. The constructs lapse, and what is left is awareness knowing itself, free of constructs. A sitter trying it tends to meet some difficulties first. The thought "there is no making in me" turns into one more sentence repeated, and repeating it becomes the next making. Attention often hunts for a feeling of emptiness and takes the hunting for the thing. Another common mistake is pushing thoughts away, which tenses the jaw, brow and shoulders and keeps the mind busy. Small signs that it is working are quiet ones. A thought starts and fades before it grows into a story. The gap between two thoughts is noticed as a gap. The urge to check how it is going loosens a little. None of this is guaranteed. Some sits are simply noisy, and the noise is still the thing to look at.
