Meaning · English

Maya is called the deluding one; it stays as the making of parts. Whoever sees the truths as holding such qualities, taking them apart one by one, does not become separate from them.

Three words carry it. Maya is the power that deludes: the text calls it vimohini, the one that bewilders. Kala means a part or a portion, and kalana is the act of dividing, measuring, reckoning something into pieces. Tattva means a principle, a thing as it is. The first clause says the deluding power lies in just this reckoning: it stays as the cutting of the whole into parts. The second clause says that when you view the truths as carrying qualities like these, and you keep taking them apart, you do not become separate from them. The measuring itself never gets you outside. Whatever you divide, you are still standing in it. That is why the ordinary moment is the doorway. Every act of sorting a thing into this and that is already happening in you, so it can be watched from inside, without going anywhere. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, so nothing is claimed for it.

1. Sit or stand where you are and look at one ordinary thing: a cup, a window, a hand. 2. Notice each time the mind cuts it up: its name, its use, its colour, how it differs from the thing beside it. 3. Do not push the cutting away. Only see it being done, as it is done. 4. When you are pulled into a story about the thing, come back to the plain seeing of it. 5. Stay with the thing and the seeing together until the time is up.

The tradition's account: the mind's work is dividing, and each division makes a seeming other. When the dividing is seen as dividing, the support under it drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself, with nothing set apart from it. That is the text's teaching, not a claim about the brain. What a sitter tends to notice: you pick one thing, a sound or a wall, and within seconds the mind has named it, rated it, set it against something else. The first difficulty is that the naming is so quick you only catch it afterward. The small sign it is working is catching it sooner, and a sense that the thing and the noticing are less sharply apart. The usual mistakes are turning it into a quiet argument with thoughts, or trying to stop the naming by force, which only adds another division: the one who stops and the thing stopped.
