Fix the Mind on Knowing
Vijnana Bhairava 98
Meaning · English
When a wish arises, or when knowing arises, set the mind there. With a mind that rests on nothing else, taking it as the self, you then come to see the truth of things.
Two key words carry this. Iccha is wish, the push toward something. Jnana is knowing, the moment something becomes known. Atmabuddhi is the sense of the self, taken as the one who wishes and knows. Ananyacetas is a mind with no other place to go. The clauses run in order. When a wish comes up, or when a knowing comes up, put the mind into that very event. Do not follow what the wish is for or what the knowing is about. Hold the mind there with the sense that this is your own self, and let nothing else pull it away. After that comes the seeing of what is real in things. The logic is plain. A wish or a knowing is the most ordinary thing a mind does, and it happens all day. Usually attention slides off it toward the object. Here the attention stays at the source, so the ordinary moment is opened from inside and shows who is wishing and who is knowing. Seeing the truth is said to follow from that steadiness, not to be made by effort. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the knowing as the mind's own awareness of itself, which is what the mind is then set on.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with the body easy and the eyes soft. 2. Wait for a wish to come, or a moment of knowing something. A small one will do: wanting water, hearing your name. 3. When it comes, do not follow what it is for. Set the mind on the wish or the knowing itself. 4. Take it as your own self, and let the mind rest there with no other place to go. 5. When the mind runs after the object, notice that, and come back to the next wish or knowing. 6. Stop when the attention is worn thin, or at the end of your time.
The tradition's account first. A wish or a knowing is a movement of the mind. The mind usually runs out along it to an object and takes itself to be that movement. When attention stays on the movement itself, with no second place to go, the running stops and the support of the object drops away. What is left is awareness knowing itself, and seeing the truth of things is said to follow. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. The first difficulty is that the wish is gone before you catch it, because attention has already gone after the thing wished for. Catching it feels like noticing a sneeze one beat late. With practice there is a small gap, a moment where the wish is still just a leaning. Another sign is that the wish loosens a little when watched, or the knowing feels less tied to its object. The usual errors are turning the watching into a thought about the wish, reaching for a special state, or holding so tightly that the body tenses.
