Meaning · English

Knowing, as it ordinarily arises, has no cause and no ground. It is a wandering. In truth it belongs to no one. Shiva is just so, dear one.

Three words carry the verse. Nirnimitta: nir is 'without', nimitta is 'cause' or 'trigger', so a knowing with no visible cause. Niradhara: adhara is 'support' or 'container', so a knowing resting on nothing. Bhramatmaka: bhrama comes from a root meaning to roam or whirl, and atmaka means 'made of', so a knowing made of roaming. Now the clauses in order. The ordinary act of knowing, a thought or a perception coming up, has no cause you can point to and no ground you can stand on. It drifts from one thing to the next. Then the turn: in truth it belongs to no one. No owner can be found behind it. The last clause says Shiva is exactly this way, and Bhairava addresses Bhairavi as dear one while saying so. The doorway works by the text's own logic: the knowing you already have, in any ordinary moment, is opened from inside. Looked at closely, it has no owner and no base, and what is left is the nature Bhairava calls Shiva. Nothing has to be added or removed first.

1. Sit or stand somewhere you will not be disturbed, and let your jaw, brow and shoulders go slack. 2. Wait for a thought or a perception to arrive. Do not call one up. 3. When it comes, ask what caused it and what it rests on. Look for the one who owns it. 4. When nothing turns up, stay with that not-finding. Do not fill it with an answer. 5. When the mind wanders into a story, notice that too as knowing with no owner, then go back to step 2. 6. Stop when the sit is over. Do not stretch it.

The tradition's account: the mind's movement is the wandering. When it is seen to have no cause, no support and no owner, it stops being fed. The support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself, which the text calls Shiva. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. You watch a thought arrive and look for who is thinking it. The first difficulty is that the search becomes one more thought, and a watcher gets built to do the looking. Attention goes back and forth between thought and watcher. Small signs of it working: a thought seems to begin by itself, a gap shows between two thoughts, and the question of who owns the thinking loses its grip for a moment. Usual ways it goes wrong: the sit goes blank or drowsy and is mistaken for the result, or 'no owner' becomes an idea held in the head. The body only needs to be still and unbraced, with the jaw, brow and shoulders let go.
