One Awareness, Every Body

Meaning · English
The nature of awareness is the same in every body; nowhere is there any difference in it. So a person who keeps contemplating everything as made of that awareness wins over becoming.
Three words carry it. Cit is awareness, the plain fact of being conscious. Dharma here means its nature, what it is by itself. Tanmaya means made of that, with awareness as the substance and not a visitor. The first line says that awareness is not larger in one body and smaller in another. Bodies differ in shape, age, mood and skill. The awareness in them does not differ anywhere. The second line draws the conclusion. Bhavayan is holding something in the mind until it becomes the way you see, so everything is held as made of that one awareness. Bhavajit is one who wins over bhava, the constant becoming into this self, that person, this state. The logic is simple. Every moment of ordinary life already has awareness in it, in you, in the stranger, in the crowd. Nothing needs to be added or removed. The doorway is the moment you are already in, opened from inside by seeing what it is made of. When the sameness is seen, the pull of becoming something in particular loosens.
1. Sit or stand wherever people or living things are near, or simply recall a few faces. 2. Rest on one fact: there is awareness in you now. Notice it before any thought about it. 3. Turn to another body, a person, a bird, a passer-by. Hold that the same awareness is in it, with no difference. 4. Move to the next body and do the same. Then let the whole room or street be made of that. 5. When the mind wanders into liking or disliking, come back to the fact of awareness in that body. 6. Stop when the holding becomes a repeated phrase. Sit a moment without it.
The tradition's account runs like this. The mind's movement is mostly sorting: me and other, mine and not mine, this state and that one. Each sorting needs a support, some body or object that is taken as the separate one. When everything is seen as made of one awareness, the supports drop away and the sorting has nothing to hold. What is left is awareness knowing itself. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. At first the idea stays a thought, and a person across the room still feels like someone else. Attention jumps between the thought and the face. A small sign it is working is a moment when a person or a sound is simply there, aware like you, and the sorting is not running. It goes wrong in two usual ways. One is repeating a sentence about oneness without looking. The other is trying to erase differences, when the verse only says that the nature of awareness does not differ.
