Meaning · English

Letting go of the sense of being housed in your own body, hold the thought 'I am everywhere.' With a steady mind and a gaze that looks at nothing else, you become happy.

Three words carry the verse. Nijadehastha means what stands in one's own body: the habit of locating yourself inside this skin. Sarvatra asmi means 'I am everywhere,' with no place left out. Bhavayan is the holding of a thought until it is lived, from the root for becoming, so it is more than repeating a phrase. The clauses go in order. First you drop the sense of being lodged in the body. Then you keep the thought 'I am everywhere' with a mind that is dṛḍha, firm and unshaken. Then you keep a vision, a seeing, that does not look at anything else; the gaze has no second object. The result named is sukha, ease or happiness. It works as a doorway because nothing new is brought in. You already say 'I' all day, and the verse takes that ordinary 'I' and lifts it off the body's boundary. The sense of self is opened from inside, where it already is. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, so nothing is claimed for it.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are steady, eyes open or softly closed. 2. Notice where you feel you are. Let that spot go, without pushing against it. 3. Think 'I am everywhere' and stay with the sense of it, not just the words. 4. Keep the mind firm and the gaze on nothing else. No second thing to look at. 5. When you drift back into the body or a thought, say the thought again gently and continue. 6. Stop when the time you set is over.

In the tradition's account, the mind suffers because it is fastened to one place, the body, and moves out from there toward things. When the 'I' is no longer fixed in the body, the support that held the movement drops away. With no second object for the gaze, nothing is left to travel toward, and awareness stays with itself. That is the text's teaching. A sitter usually finds the first part hard. The 'I' keeps snapping back to the head, the chest, the sore knee. The thought 'everywhere' can turn into a picture or a sentence repeated in the head, and that is the common way it goes wrong: it becomes one more object. Small signs it is working are quiet ones. The edge of the body feels less like a wall. Sounds seem to happen inside the same room as you. Attention stops hunting and rests. Some people feel dizzy or vague, which usually means they are straining. Easing the effort helps more than adding force.
