Knowing Without Borders

Vijnana Bhairava 105

Meaning · English

The knowing in a jar and the rest, or the wanting and the rest inside me, has not stayed confined. Holding this in mind, the one who holds it becomes all-pervading.

Three words carry it. Vijnana is knowing, the plain act of being aware of something, here the awareness of a jar. Iccha is wanting or will, the first of the movements inside a person. Sarvaga means going everywhere, or all-pervading. Bhavayan is the one who is bringing something into being by holding it in mind, so it names a steady contemplating and not a passing thought. The verse sets two ordinary things side by side. Outside, a jar and other objects are known. Inside, a wish and other stirrings rise. Both are moments of awareness, and the verse says that awareness has not become fenced into the jar or into the one who wants. It goes everywhere. The one who keeps holding this becomes that everywhere-going. Bhairava's answer to how his nature is reached is the same as before: no special state is needed. The jar seen and the wish felt are already the doorway, and the opening happens from inside the moment, by letting the knowing be larger than its object.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are, body loose, eyes open or closed. 2. Pick one thing you know right now, a jar, a cup, a wall, and notice the plain knowing of it. 3. Then notice a wish moving in you, small or large. Treat it the same way, as a knowing. 4. Hold the thought that this knowing is not boxed into the object or into the one who wants. It is everywhere. 5. When the mind wanders or the phrase goes dead, go back to the jar or the wish and begin again. 6. Stop when the time is up, without judging how it went.

The tradition's account runs like this. The mind's movement stops when it is no longer pinned to a thing. The jar and the wish are only supports. When the support drops away, what is left is awareness knowing itself, and that awareness was never tied to one spot. A sitter usually meets difficulties first. The thought turns into a sentence repeated again and again, or the mind tries to picture something huge, which is only another object. The jar pulls back into being a thing over there, and the wish pulls back into being mine. Small signs that it is working are quieter: an object seen without the usual grip on it, a want noticed as something that comes and goes within a wider knowing. With the jaw and shoulders loose, the body takes little part. It usually goes wrong by forcing, by inflating the idea into an image, or by concluding too early that nothing is happening.
