Meaning · English
Every embodied being knows a thing grasped and a one who grasps it. For yogis there is one difference: they stay attentive within that very link between the two.
Start with three words. Grahya is what gets grasped: a sound, a face, a thought. Grahaka is the one who grasps it. Samvitti is awareness of the pair together. Sambandha is the relation between them, the link that joins them. Savadhanata is attentiveness, a readiness that stays awake. The first line says this pairing is common to all embodied beings. Everyone who has a body sees something and feels themselves seeing it. Nobody needs a teacher for that. The second line says yogis differ in one respect only. They are attentive within the link. They do not leave the experience for another place or add a second event. The same moment is lived, with attention kept on the joining of grasper and grasped. This works as a doorway because nothing has to be built or reached. Every ordinary moment already contains the pair and the link. Bhairava's answer to how his nature is reached is that it is opened from inside the common moment. The difference between an ordinary person and a yogi lies in how much attention rests there, not in what is given.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with your eyes open and your body at ease. 2. Let one ordinary thing reach you: a sound in the room, or a colour in front of you. 3. Notice two things together: what is being taken in, and the one taking it in. 4. Rest your attention on the link between them. Do not chase the object and do not stare at yourself. 5. When you find you have wandered into a thought, come back to the link without scolding. 6. Stop when the attention gets tight or dull. Begin again at the next ordinary moment of seeing or hearing.
The tradition's account is that ordinary awareness runs outward. It lands on the object and forgets the one who grasps. Attention kept on the link between them is said to hold the mind's running still, because it has no object to run after. The support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. A sitter usually finds the first difficulty is simple. Attention slides to the object and a thought starts about it. Or it swings the other way and becomes a tense watching of oneself, with a tight brow and held breath. Neither is the link. The small signs of it working are quieter: the object stays sharp but feels less sticky, and a sound is heard without a story attached. Gaps between thoughts may seem slightly longer. The usual errors are straining, hunting for a special state, and counting a pleasant calm as success. The practice is ordinary perception with attention kept in the joining.
