Another's Body As Yours
Vijnana Bhairava 107
Meaning · English
Feel awareness in another's body just as you feel it in your own. Give up leaning on your own body as the one place you live, and in a few days you become all-pervading.
Three words carry the verse. Saṃvitti is awareness, the plain fact of being aware, before it is sorted into mine and yours. Apekṣā is leaning on something, expecting it to hold you up. Vyāpin is one who spreads through everything, what pervades. The first clause asks you to feel awareness in another body the way you feel it in your own. You know your own body from inside as lit and present. The verse asks for that same knowing placed in someone else's form. The word 'even' in the original says this reaches past the obvious case. The second clause names what stands in the way: the habit of treating your own body as the only home of awareness. Drop that leaning and the sense of being confined goes loose. The last clause gives a span: in a few days, you become pervasive. That is the text's claim, not a promise. It works as a doorway because the ordinary moment is used as it is. You already feel awareness in one body all day. Feeling it in a second body shows it was never fixed to the first.
1. Sit or stand where you are, and feel for a moment that you are aware in your own body, as you always are. 2. Turn to another body: a person near you, or one you picture clearly. Rest there and feel awareness present in it, the same way it is present in you. 3. Ease the thought that your body is the only place you live. Do not argue with it, just stop leaning on it. 4. When the mind starts thinking about the other person, drop the thoughts and feel from there again. 5. After about ten minutes, let go and sit quietly. Repeat on other days.
The tradition's account: awareness is one and unbounded, but it clings to a single body and calls that body 'I'. When the mind stops treating that body as its support, the clinging drops. Awareness is left knowing itself, with no edge to stop at. That is what the text means by becoming pervasive. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first nothing seems to move. You picture the other body or look at it, and your mind makes a thought about it instead of feeling from there. That is the usual miss: imagining a person rather than placing awareness in them. A small sign it is working is a moment when the sense of 'here, behind my eyes' loosens, or when the other body feels briefly as near as your own hand. It may also bring unease, as if you were losing your footing. Pushing hard tends to tighten the body and shrink the whole thing. Letting go of the push does more than effort does. Results differ from sitter to sitter, and the days mentioned are the text's measure, not a schedule.
