The verse and its meaning · Vijnana Bhairava Tantra · Knowing who you are

Firm certainty of being Shiva

Vijnana Bhairava 109

Meaning · English

Knowing all, doing all, pervading all, the supreme lord: that same one am I. Whoever holds this with firmness, as the nature of Shiva, becomes Shiva.

Four titles are given first. Sarvajna is all-knowing: sarva, all, and jna, knowing. Sarvakarta is all-doing, the one who makes everything. Vyapaka comes from the root vyap, to reach through, so it means the one who pervades and is not located anywhere in particular. Parameshvara is the supreme lord. Then comes the turn: that very one is I. The verse does not say the reader will resemble this lord. It says the reader is the one. The last clause names the condition. Dardhya means firmness, from dridha, set hard. Held firmly, as the nature of Shiva, the conviction makes one Shiva. Held loosely, it stays a sentence. Nothing else is asked for, no posture and no object. The doorway is the plainest word in any moment: I. Every perception and every thought arrives already carrying it. Bhairava's answer is that this ordinary I, opened from inside, is the one described by the four titles. Knowing, doing and reaching are what the I is already doing all day, so the verse asks for no new event, only a firm recognition of what is present.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with eyes open or closed, and let the mind settle without a fixed object. 2. Say inwardly, slowly, once: knowing all, doing all, reaching all, the supreme lord, that I am. 3. Drop the words and attend to the plain I that is present, the one that hears, sees and thinks. 4. Hold that as settled fact, without picturing anything vast. 5. When doubt or a story rises, notice who is noticing it, and return to the same I. 6. Stop when the sitting feels complete or the time is up. Say the sentence once more, quietly.

In the tradition's account, the sense of being a small, limited person is a thin covering over awareness that already knows everything, acts through everything and reaches everywhere. Holding the conviction firmly lets that covering thin until the mind's own shape stops hiding what it rests on, and the sitter stands as Shiva. What a sitter tends to notice is different. At first the sentence sounds borrowed, and the mind answers it with objections or with a pleasant picture of vastness. Both are only more thoughts. Sooner or later attention catches on the plain I that is present before any of this and does not leave when the thoughts do. Small signs are a quieter inner commentary, less hurry to be someone, and a steadiness that comes back after being lost. The usual mistakes are puffing the self up with pride, repeating the words like a chant with nothing behind them, and giving up when doubt returns. Firmness here means returning, not forcing.
