Meaning · English

When devotion swells so full that the person loses their taste for things, whatever state of mind then arises is Shankara's power. Contemplate it always; thereby one becomes Shiva.

Three words carry it. Bhakti is devotion, a pull toward what you love. Virakta means colored away, faded: the grip of ordinary things loosens. Shakti is power, and here it is Shiva's own power: the verse simply says that this mind is Shankara's Shakti. The verse says that when devotion fills to the brim, the person turns away from things, and the mind that comes up in that turning is not a lesser mind. It is Shankara's power, Shiva's own. Nothing was manufactured. Detachment here is not a decision to give things up. It is what is left when something else has taken up all the room. The last clause tells the practitioner to contemplate that mind always as Shiva's power, and says that through this one becomes Shiva. So the doorway is an ordinary moment, a fullness of love that makes everything else go pale, opened from inside until it shows what it was.

1. Sit or stand somewhere quiet, or stay wherever you are when it happens. 2. Bring to mind the Lord, or the object of your devotion, and let the feeling fill. 3. Do not push the feeling larger. Let it come to the brim by itself. 4. When other things fade in interest, stay with that fading and the mind that is left. 5. When the mind wanders, return to what you love, not to effort. 6. When the state settles, regard that mind as Shiva's power and dwell on it without managing it, then stop when it lifts.

The tradition's account: the mind usually moves out toward objects, one after another. When devotion overfills, that outward movement stops of its own accord, because nothing is lacking and nothing is sought. The mind that remains is the power of Shiva, awareness resting in itself. Holding that state is Shiva holding it, not a separate person doing it. What a sitter tends to notice: you cannot produce this on demand. Trying to feel devotion often yields a forced warmth that is mostly effort, and the jaw or chest tightens. The small sign it is working is a quiet loosening, where wanting things simply is not loud for a while, and the mind is not bored or dull but full. The usual ways it goes wrong are mistaking numbness for it, pushing things away rather than being filled, and grabbing at the state, which ends it. Letting it stay without managing it is the whole work.
