Emptiness Inside Every Object

Vijnana Bhairava 122

Meaning · English

When one thing is known, in every thing there is emptiness. Hold that emptiness in the mind and meditate on it alone. Even the knowing of it then grows quiet and settles.

Three words carry the verse. Vastu is a thing, any object that stands in front of you. Vedya is what is known, the object as it is grasped. Shunyata is emptiness: the absence of any fixed thing that the object is in itself. The verse starts with an object being known. Then it says that in all things, not only this one, emptiness is found. Take that emptiness and hold it in the mind, dwelling on it and nothing else. The last clause says that even the knowing, the vidita, grows quiet and settles. The mind that was gripping the object and then gripping emptiness has nothing left to grip, so the grasping subsides. The doorway is the ordinary moment of seeing a cup, a wall, a face. The text does not ask you to go anywhere else. It opens that moment from inside, by finding the emptiness already within what is known. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the quieting as the mind resting once even the thought of emptiness has done its work.

1. Sit or stand where you can see one plain object, a cup or a wall, without effort. 2. Look at it and let yourself know it as a thing. Do not hurry. 3. Notice that you cannot find a fixed thing in it, and let that be true of everything around you too. 4. Hold that emptiness in the mind and rest on it alone. 5. When the mind wanders to names or stories, come back to the emptiness. 6. When even the holding seems to quiet, stop trying and stay as you are until the time ends.

The tradition's account: the mind moves by taking up one object after another. When emptiness is found in every object, nothing is left for it to take up. The support drops away, the movement stops, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the text's teaching. In practice a sitter often finds the first step easy to say and hard to do. You look at a thing and the name arrives first, then the story about it. Attention may slide into a blank, dull feeling that is not the same as what the verse describes. Another common slip is turning emptiness into a new object, a picture you hold tightly. Small signs it is working: the object keeps its shape but loses its pull, the naming slows, and the effort to hold emptiness eases without a push. Then even the holding feels unnecessary. Some sits never get that far, and that is ordinary.
