Purity Beyond Sorting
Vijnana Bhairava 123
Meaning · English
The purity that people of small knowledge remember as purity is, in Shambhu's seeing, not purity at all. It is not clean, and so it is unclean. Therefore let the one free of constructed thought be happy.
Three words carry it. Shuddhi is purity, the state of being clean. Shambhu-darshana is Shambhu's way of seeing, Shiva's own view, as against the view of the kincij-jna, those who know only a little. Nirvikalpa is the mind without vikalpa, the habit of building a thought, cutting the world into parts and labelling them. Here the labels are clean and unclean. The clauses run in order. People of small knowledge hold a certain idea of purity. In Shambhu's view, that idea is not purity. It is not clean, and it is in fact unclean. The reasoning is that a purity defined against impurity already depends on a division the mind has drawn. Take away the division and neither word has anything to stand on. So the verse ends on the one who has stopped constructing, and calls that person happy. Its logic is that the doorway is the ordinary moment of judging something as pure or impure. That moment is opened from inside. When the sorting drops, what is left is the plain thing seen before the label. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the purity of the small-minded as ritual and bodily cleanliness taken to be the whole of purity.
1. Wait for a moment when you judge something as clean or unclean: a cup, a hand, a corner of the room, a person. 2. Stay where you are and look at it. Notice the small pull of liking or distaste. 3. Do not argue with the pull. Let the label go unused and keep looking at the thing as it is. 4. When the mind starts sorting again, see that it has, and return to looking. 5. Stay with it for a few minutes, then go back to what you were doing.
The tradition's account runs like this. Sorting things into clean and unclean is the mind's movement, a vikalpa. When that movement stops, the label that stood between awareness and the thing falls away. What is left is awareness knowing itself, and the text calls that state happiness. This is the text's teaching about the mind, not a claim about the body. A sitter trying it usually finds the first difficulty at once. The sorting is quick and mostly unnoticed. A flicker of distaste at a smell, a stain, a person, arrives before any decision is made. The first sign it is working is simply catching that flicker as a flicker. Next, the attention may rest a moment on the thing itself, its colour or texture, without the verdict. That gap is often brief and slightly odd. The usual ways it goes wrong are two. One is turning the practice into a new rule, in which sorting is bad and not sorting is good, which is just another sorting. The other is forcing the mind blank. Nothing is pushed away. The verdict is simply not followed up.
