Nothing Apart From It

Vijnana Bhairava 124

Meaning · English

Everywhere, what is there is Bhairava, even in the most common things within reach of the senses. Nothing else exists apart from him. So the path is one with no second.

Three words carry it. Bhairava is the name for the absolute, here the ground of everything, not a figure sitting somewhere else. Bhava means a state or a thing that is, so "Bhairava is the bhava" says that whatever is present is him. Gocara means the range of the senses, what can be seen, heard, touched. The verse puts Bhairava inside that range, in the common things too, not only in rare or lofty ones. Advaya means without a second. Now the clauses. Everywhere, what is there is Bhairava. Even ordinary objects are met as him. Nothing exists beyond him or apart from him, because anything apart would be a second thing. Since there is no second, the way to him has no distance in it. Nothing has to be left behind and nothing far off has to be reached. That is why the ordinary moment works as a doorway on the text's own logic: if the thing in front of you were not already him, you would need to go elsewhere. Since it is, the way in is to open the moment you are already in, from inside.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with an ordinary thing in range: a cup, a wall, a sound from the street. 2. Let your attention rest on it as it is. Add nothing to it and do not try to make it feel special. 3. Take it as nothing apart from Bhairava, with no second thing beside it. 4. When the mind wanders to somewhere better, notice it and come back to what is in front of you. 5. When another ordinary thing comes into range, let it take the place of the first. 6. Stop when the time you set is over.

The tradition's account runs like this. The mind keeps moving because it reaches for something better than what is here. When an ordinary object is taken as nothing other than Bhairava, the reaching has no place to go, since nothing stands outside him. The movement settles, and awareness is left resting on what is present, with no second thing to chase. A sitter usually finds the first difficulty at once: the mind wants the object to be special, and it is not. A cup is a cup. Trying to make it feel holy goes wrong, because that adds a second thing, a feeling, on top of it. The attention slides to commentary: what it is, whether it is working. A small sign is that the object stays more plainly present, with fewer remarks about it. The body needs little. Eyes soft, shoulders loose, spine upright but not stiff. The breath is left as it is, since the verse names no breath.
